Check Estimates and Estimate Conditioning
Check Estimates: A comparison check estimate is often instrumental in assuring the integrity of the project budget approval. We prepare check estimates from complete TIC (total installed cost) to any section or prime discipline that requires critical attention. Rigor for our check estimates includes, design basis reviews for MTO (material take off) or bill of quantities (BOQ) quantity interrogations where inter-discipline gaps are detected or suspected, and basis for prorates and all allowances provided by design team.
Estimate Conditioning: Often estimates require an unbiased second opinion. We offer professional validation and conditioning, where a detail gap analysis is performed and conformity with owner's guideline is assured.
Through analysis and research, we found multiple elements that bring about challenges in predictable estimation. Out of many elements, a common trend we observed is inadequate infrastructure and environment within cost estimating departments. This includes a lack of relevant experience among estimating staff, scarcity of tools, and methodologies applied for cost estimation. In many cases we observed the entire estimating department is comprised of one or two estimators. The preparation of a Class 3 estimate for a US$20 million project could take up to 1500 hours . A department of only a few estimators would not be able to cope multiple Class 3 estimate simultaneously! This problem is exacerbated if the estimators lack the necessary tools, databases, and processes required.
We strive every day to learn and improve new methods to reduce the laborious activities in computing estimates. We have come up with models for seamless integration of external services to internal departments, to focus on project cost predictability together. Our concentration is on tangible value addition, where creative and innovative ways will lead us to greater heights in cost predictability.
